The inside track for those who need to know

Chaps seem to be wearing their hats big this year. W Carson is even less visible beneath a giant black job [now, now, we're a multi-ethnic blog post - Ed]. The Morecambe & Wise style seems to be in vogue, beware sunburn on the exposed for'ead. Top hats are like flat caps - the shape should fit the face; these shiny black numbers are build for big round faces (cue John Parrott); we more slender folk need a sleeker model.

Now BUBBLES. Today's selection for the opening day of the greatest meeting in the world is: Ch Gardet Cuvee Flavy, "a truly superb house champagne, floral, elegant, fine and long, this is spot on, £28.99" from The Naked Grape (www.TheNakedGrape.co.uk) . We'll build up to some vintage stuff when you've won enough to pay for it.

And for the losers amongst us all, over rare tournedos this evening, a bottle or two of the Racers and Rascals Pinot Noir from SE Oz: "is this right, a Yarra Valley Pinot Noir for £8.99, we must have gone mad!" From The Naked Grape as above.

[Where's the Krug got to? - Ed] later, later...
