The French Open, dull old clay but at least the sun shines at Roland Garros and the scents of Ambre solaire and garlic mix with the natural scents of unprotected under-arm cooling as this pot-pourri of national identity wafts over the second-best Euro tennis stadium.
Good site at www.rolandgarros.com and www.smarkets.com are carrying a market at least for the continuing duel between les… Continue

Off to Newbury tomorrow (Friday) with an old stockbroker punter friend, Eelco (he's Dutch, if you hadnt guessed). He has betted on course since 1965 with 'rails' bookie supremo Stephen Little. I cant turn up there without some informed comments - please help me with some ideas for powerful (ie winning) propositions!

New markets and great uncertainties, room for all opinions: political betting has been served a Grand Slam hand by the quirks and vagaries of the Great Poll of the People. The tussle for a balanced parliament continues.
Our friends at PoliticalSmarkets

Bigot: what a brilliant word to burst on the general election scene!
Ignoring the sensitivities of the poor woman so described, who would possibly use such a word without clear, unambiguous intent. It's an old word (16thC French) and not one, I imagine, that any of us have ever used or thought of using.
The Great Gordo demonstrates once again his other worldly arrogance and… Continue

Its not

change for all our sakes.

BBC 2 at 1130 today - hurry, only 30 mins to go.
Andrew Neil entertains Guido Fawkes on Daily Politics this morning. Gave Vince Cable a right roasting yesterday, one hears.

So what do we make of the Great 'Debate', bring back the Westminster roist-about, say I.
Little
heat, less light, no rows and shouting matches, dull to the point of
extinction, no chance for the 'audience' to fire the unexpected shot at
the posed, poised, polished contenders. Giving an unhealthy appearance
of being able to work together, these three grey-suited men pandered to
the public's reported desire for a hung parliament.

Is POLITICS a SPORT - it's certainly a gamble and it's 'bettable'.
Politcs doesnt pass the 'slacks and a belt' test propounded on The Sports Exchange in earlier discussions [no proper sport can be played in such attire, darts and golf spring to mind]. But it is a lying, cheating, scrapping sort of contest, no morals, bent rules, professional fouls - just like our good old favourites footie, cricket, et al.
Bet now on our in-house betting exchange provided by the…

In the national interest (yawn, yawn) I have devoted my bloggable energies to the upcoming battle of the hustings. I am grateful to my blog-mate, KyrixLinx, for this briefing on the state of the parties (ie disarray).
Politics and economics, the two are inseparable, arent they? Well, not
so sure: the economy is a basket case and yet the failed incumbent of
13 years is still in the race. The main… Continue

Are we surprised? The LTA, governing body of UK tennis, rubbished for its performance in fielding worthless David Cup teams (yet again). despite £40m+ lavished on the sport, despite moving to a custom-built centre at Roehampton (its the white elephant in the room syndrome), despite hugely, highly paid staff and 'management':yet, here we are, facing immediate relegation to the bottom, pits, sump of the world tennis competition. Inept, inadequate, waste of money, we may all think. A…

Seriously informed comment from Our Correspondent, a seriously experienced racing man. You should also read his earlier pieces on Kauto Star and Denman.

Tennis catastrophe follows similar major sporting disasters on the playing fields of Olde England.
Tennis, never well served by the UK game's 'managing authorities', plumbs the depths with the defeat by Lithuania [where's that, wise guy? - Ed]. The nadir of our fortunes approaches with the ultimate relegation play-off, to avoid the final slide down the snake of tennis oblivion.
How can this be, £40 million plus sunk in the fat cats and plush backsides of the UK tennis…
